LITURGICAL MINISTRIES

Saint Hilary’s Episcopal Church has a wonderful group of gifted individuals who support the Liturgical needs of our church.

These ministries are an important part of honoring God by preparing the place of worship and service. Many stand behind the scene but are equally important in bringing you the worship service each week.

Set Aside for Service - Preparing the Sanctuary

Alter Guild

Saint Hilary's Episcopal Church

Altar Guild is a ministry of service at Saint Hilary’s that has its roots in the historical Hebrew tradition of the Old Testament Levites. We are a part of those people who have been set aside for service. When we offer ourselves to serve at the altar, we are offering ourselves to God as a living prayer.

A certain spirit floats out of every sacristy the way an aroma floats out of the kitchen. It sets the tone of the worship and more than that it sets the tone of congregational life. The altar guild is part of the heart of the parish. They are evangelists, these altar guild folks! They are the preparers, keepers and transmitters of some of the coolest stuff we have in the Episcopal Church.

If you are interested in a ministry within the church that stays mostly behind the scenes, that prepares the sanctuary for various services during the week and maintains all the sacred vessels, lines and vestments – the Altar Guild may be for you.

Please contact Janet Mutzabaugh for more information (239) 989-4533.

Visiting and Administering Communion at Home

Pastoral Care Team and Visitors

Eucharistic Visitors take communion to the homes of our parishioners who are unable to attend church. This ministry, is open to any confirmed member, is a vital one in which we share the love of Christ to those who are ill or shut-in.

Helping at Service

Acolytes

The word “acolyte” comes from the Greek word “acolytos,” meaning “companion, attendant, or helper.” Acolytes assist the clergy at the altar with a variety of duties, including processing in and out of the service carrying torches, cross, and flag; lighting the altar candles; handing the elements to clergy as they prepare for communion; and any other ways they can help make the altar experience a positive one. This ministry is for both our youth (ages 8 and up) and adults.

Assisting in Service

Vergers

A verger is a member of the laity who works under the direction of the parish priest to assist with the organization and operation of religious services in the Episcopal Church in the US and churches in the Anglican Communion.  At Saint Hilary’s Episcopal Church, the verger is the master/mistress of ceremonies at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Rite II Service.  S/He makes sure all the service participants are present and ready to perform so the flow of the service is smooth and reverential.  Three of the five vergers at St. Hilary’s are Fellows of the Vergers’ Guild of the Episcopal Church.

The verger is trained by the priest (or another verger).  The verger should be someone interested in and knowledgeable about liturgy.  The ministry is open to any confirmed member.  Volunteers are invited.

Greeting and Making You Welcome and Comfortable

Ushers

Saint Hilary's Episcopal Church

Ushers are often the first people visitors meet. They are responsible for greeting folks as they arrive for service, handing out the service bulletin, providing information about the Church and it’s services, seating people, collecting the alms, directing “traffic flow” during communion, and after services picking up items left in the church and redistributing the Bible, Book of Common Prayer, and Hymnal. All baptized members of the church are eligible. Couples are particularly encouraged to participate, as are families.

Fr. Charles spoke recently about sharing talents. A very special gift which you may wish to share with St Hilary’s would be to volunteer to usher at one of the Christmas services. It is a very special feeling to greet people, especially at the lovely holiday services, and help them find a seat if the church is crowded. Please consider helping at one of the Christmas eve services or Christmas morning. You will probably LOVE it and want to sign up for the regular usher schedule! It is easy and fun, and you get to know everyone! Contact Sue Miller to sign up.
